As part of Bible Society Australia's anniversary celebrations an exhibition of approximately 24 historically important Bibles will be displayed in a prominent location in each State capital. Here is a picture of one of the Bibles to give us a taste:
Lord Hopetoun’s Bible (1901), was presented to Lord Hopetoun, first Governor-General of the new Commonwealth of Australia, to mark the inauguration of this our new nation. It has been used for the swearing in of Australian Governor Generals since its repatriation to Australia.
Specially bound and embellished it is the absolute epitome of the bookbinders’ art. The book is leather bound with silver clasps. The front cover bears a gold embossed and engraved Hopetoun Coat-of-Arms. The end pages are of watered silk. The edges have been trimmed in the round and then hand carved and decorated before being gilded with gold leaf. The dedication page is superbly executed in particularly fine calligraphy.
